Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (or any cooking oil)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (or white vinegar)
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper (or more to taste)
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth (or water)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger (optional)
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the chicken:
Season both sides of the chicken breasts with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Set aside.
  • Cook the chicken:
Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken breasts (or thighs) and cook for 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and fully cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F/74°C). Remove the chicken from the pan and set it aside.
  • Make the sauce:
In the same skillet, add the butter and let it melt. Add the sliced onion and sauté for about 2-3 minutes, until softened. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger (if using), cooking for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Combine the ingredients for the sauce:
Stir in the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, and rice vinegar. Add the chicken broth and bring the sauce to a simmer. Let it cook for about 3-5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  • Add black pepper:
Add the freshly ground black pepper to the sauce. Stir well and adjust the pepper to your taste for more heat.
  • Finish cooking the chicken:
Return the cooked chicken to the skillet with the sauce. Spoon the sauce over the chicken to coat it evenly. Let the chicken simmer in the sauce for another 3-5 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  • Serve:
Garnish with chopped green onions (optional) and serve over steamed rice or with vegetables of your choice.

Notes

  • For extra heat, you can add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes or a few thinly sliced fresh chili peppers.
  • You can use chicken thighs for a juicier, more flavorful version of this dish.
  • If you prefer a milder version, reduce the amount of black pepper in the sauce.
