Description

This savory Onion Tart features caramelized onions on a buttery puff pastry crust, topped with melted Gruyere cheese and fresh thyme. It’s a perfect appetizer or light meal, bringing rich, sweet flavors with every bite!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet of pre-made puff pastry
  • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese
  • Fresh thyme leaves for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and caramelized (about 20-25 minutes).
  • Unroll the puff pastry onto a baking sheet.
  • Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
  • Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese over the onions.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  • Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh thyme leaves before serving.

Notes

  • You can use other types of cheese like Swiss or cheddar if Gruyere is unavailable.
  • For extra richness, drizzle a little balsamic glaze over the tart just before serving.
  • The tart is best served warm, but can also be enjoyed at room temperature.
