- 1 sheet of pre-made puff pastry
- 3 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyere cheese
- Fresh thyme leaves for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and caramelized (about 20-25 minutes).
- Unroll the puff pastry onto a baking sheet.
- Spread the caramelized onions evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Sprinkle the grated Gruyere cheese over the onions.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
- Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh thyme leaves before serving.
Notes
- You can use other types of cheese like Swiss or cheddar if Gruyere is unavailable.
- For extra richness, drizzle a little balsamic glaze over the tart just before serving.
- The tart is best served warm, but can also be enjoyed at room temperature.
