Ingredients
-
1 lb ground beef
-
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
-
2 tbsp butter
-
1/2 cup beef broth
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1/2 tsp garlic powder
-
1/2 tsp dried thyme
-
1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)
-
1/4 tsp black pepper (adjust to taste)
-
2 cups shredded Swiss cheese (or Gruyère for a more authentic flavor)
-
1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
-
2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)
Instructions
-
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside.
-
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
-
Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper to the onions. Stir to combine and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the broth is absorbed and the mixture is well combined.
-
In a baking dish, combine the cooked beef and the onion mixture, then top with shredded Swiss cheese and breadcrumbs if using.
-
Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
-
Let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
-
For a low-carb version, skip the breadcrumbs and use a low-carb cheese like mozzarella.
-
You can also add mushrooms to the caramelized onions for extra flavor and texture.
-
The casserole can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven until warm.
