Description

Indulge in this hearty and flavorful French Onion Beef Casserole, packed with savory beef, caramelized onions, and a cheesy, comforting topping. It’s an easy-to-make, one-dish meal perfect for family dinners or gatherings. A deliciously satisfying take on the classic French onion soup!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef

  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1/2 cup beef broth

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme

  • 1/2 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper (adjust to taste)

  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese (or Gruyère for a more authentic flavor)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)

  • 2 tbsp olive oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spoon, until browned. Drain any excess fat and set the beef aside.

  • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 15-20 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.

  • Add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper to the onions. Stir to combine and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the broth is absorbed and the mixture is well combined.

  • In a baking dish, combine the cooked beef and the onion mixture, then top with shredded Swiss cheese and breadcrumbs if using.

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a low-carb version, skip the breadcrumbs and use a low-carb cheese like mozzarella.

  • You can also add mushrooms to the caramelized onions for extra flavor and texture.

  • The casserole can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven until warm.
