Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (preferably lean)
  • 1 small head of cabbage, thinly sliced (about 6 cups)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional for heat)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Green onions, chopped, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Ground Beef:

    • Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
    • Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart with a spatula until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain any excess fat if needed and set the beef aside.
  2. Sauté the Aromatics:

    • In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil.
    • Add the sliced onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened.
    • Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  3. Cook the Cabbage:

    • Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet and stir-fry for about 4-5 minutes, until it begins to soften but still has a bit of crunch.
  4. Add Sauces and Season:

    • Return the cooked ground beef to the skillet with the cabbage.
    • Add soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), hoisin sauce (if using), and sesame oil to the pan. Stir everything to combine and coat the beef and cabbage with the sauce.
    • Season with crushed red pepper flakes (optional) and salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Finish and Serve:

    • Stir everything together and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the cabbage is tender and the flavors are well combined.
    • Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds (if desired).

Notes

  • ou can add other vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or mushrooms for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Adjust the soy sauce and sesame oil to taste if you prefer a stronger or milder flavor.
