Ingredients

Scale

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp tomato sauce or ketchup
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt

For the Mushroom Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying the steaks)
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 8 oz button mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tsp water (slurry)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Prepare the Salisbury Steaks:

    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, tomato sauce (or ketchup), egg, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, dried oregano, ground black pepper, and salt.
    • Mix everything together until well combined.
    • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into an oval or round patty.
  • Cook the Steaks:

    • Heat 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Once the oil is hot, add the beef patties to the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, or until the patties are browned and cooked through.
    • Remove the steaks from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
  • Make the Mushroom Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
    • Add the sliced mushrooms and cook for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the mushrooms are browned and softened.
    • Pour in the beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to combine.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Thicken the Gravy:

    • Stir the cornstarch and water slurry into the gravy and continue simmering for 2-3 minutes, until the gravy thickens.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  • Serve:

    • Return the Salisbury steaks to the skillet and spoon some of the gravy over the top.
    • Let the steaks simmer in the gravy for an additional 5 minutes to heat through.
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks with the mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

  • You can substitute the button mushrooms with other types of mushrooms like cremini or shiitake for a different flavor profile.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, simply add more cornstarch slurry until you reach your desired consistency.

  • This recipe works well with mashed potatoes, but you can also serve it with rice or roasted vegetables for a full meal.
