Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package red velvet cake mix
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (110°F)
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 egg
- 3 1/2 – 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the red velvet cake mix and active dry yeast. Add warm water, vegetable oil, and egg. Mix well to combine.
- Gradually add enough flour to form a soft dough. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 6-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to grease the top. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Punch the dough down and turn it onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a 16×12 inch rectangle.
- Spread softened butter over the dough. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and ground cinnamon, then sprinkle it evenly over the butter.
- Roll the dough up jelly-roll style, starting from the long side. Cut the rolled dough into 12 equal slices.
- Arrange the rolls cut side down in a greased 13×9 inch baking dish. Cover and let the rolls rise until doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- In a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. Spread the frosting over the warm rolls.
Notes
- For a fluffier texture, you can use bread flour instead of all-purpose flour.
- If you don’t have red velvet cake mix, you can use chocolate cake mix for a similar flavor.
- The rolls are best enjoyed fresh, but they can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2-3 days. You can also freeze them for longer storage.
- For extra sweetness, drizzle more cream cheese frosting over the rolls before serving.
